The ultimate holiday self-care gift basket

One Easter Sunday in the 1990’s I blew the minds of the staff and residents of the residential house for young adults with disabilities I was working at when I placed a magazine-worthy ham on our holiday table.

The ham itself was a slimy canned affair supplied by our food service company, but I had a secret weapon.

Martha Stewart.

I was devoted to Martha as a newly married woman and subscribed to her magazine, Martha Stewart Living. When I saw the ham recipe in the April edition, I knew what had to be done.

I grabbed the additional ingredients I knew wouldn't be supplied by the food service company and set to work crafting the most glorious canned ham anyone had ever seen.

That ham was talked about for years to come, and for me, it was important because I believe everyone deserves something extraordinary.

Martha became sort of my patron saint while I worked at the house, so much so that Marthisms like “It’s a good thing.” and “Pineapples are the symbol of hospitality.” were overheard being used by both staff and the residents.

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard about her book tour and Netflix documentary.

If you're not already a fan, I still suggest checking out the documentary. It provides a fascinating glimpse into a woman who is passionately uncompromising and confidently makes her way through life with a strong and assertive style.

Love her or hate her, she honestly doesn’t care.
